Thin Walled Pressure Vessel

An investigation of the validity of the basic equations of stress in thin-walled pressure vessels. In addition to the pressure, torque can be applied to the vessel for the combined stress.

Experiment Time: 1 Hour

This experiment and apparatus is designed to investigate:

  1. Strains developed along the outside surface of a thin walled pressure vessel.
  2. Stresses developed along the outside surface of a thin walled pressure vessel.
  3. Strains developed along the outside surface of a thin walled pressure vessel while a torque is applied to the vessel.
  4. Stresses developed along the outside surface of a thin walled pressure vessel while a torque is applied to the vessel.

Time Requirements (for a recommended group size of 2 to 3 people):

  • Setup Time: 10 to 15 minutes
  • Experiment Time: approx. 60 minutes
