Buckling of Columns, Three Station Apparatus

Examination of all parameters of Euler's buckling equation, including the end support conditions.

Experiment Time: 30 Minutes

This Experiment is intended to investigate:

  1. ALL parameters in the Euler's buckling equation [PCR = π2 E I / (K L)2].
  2. The proportionality of PCR to the modulus of elasticity ( E ) of the material used.
  3. The proportionality of PCR to the area moment of inertia ( I ) of the section used.
  4. The inverse proportionality of PCR to unsupported length ( L ) of the column
  5. The inverse proportionality of PCR to the end support condition ( K-factor ) of te column
  6. The simulation of intermediate supports to physically observe the formation of other modes of buckling.

Time requirements (for a recommended group size of 2 to 3 people):

  • Setup Time: 5 to 10 minutes
  • Experiment Time: approx 30 min.
