FSP Courses & CELOverviewEach year, all incoming students participate in the First Year Seminar Program (FSP) by enrolling and attending one of approximately 90 FSP courses—all of which are offered during the fall. The students from each FSP course are then assigned to the same residential floor—providing a unique opportunity for students to live, learn and serve together. Bonner Center staff work with individual faculty members to shape and support CEL projects that are collaboratively built into their courses with the assistance of local non-profit organizations or community groups. These projects connect the learning objectives of the course with efforts to address the unmet needs of the local or regional community. During the fall 2008 semester, professors from 21 FSP sections integrated a CEL project into their courses—13 more than the previous year. As a result, nearly 400 first year students—just over 25% of the class of 2011 —completed their first-year CEL requirement via this class-based approach. The Center hopes to continue this upward trend next fall. Faculty members teaching an FSP course who are interested in working with the Center on a CEL project should contact Patrick Donohue before the end of May. The links above provide summaries from a sample of FSP courses (Fall 2008) and brief descriptions of two innovative efforts--the Youth Development Institute and the Living in a Virtual World (LVW) Project. |
