Background information
The history of Star Wars begins in 1977 with the release of the first film, titled "Star Wars" (later retitled "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope"). Created by George Lucas, the film was a groundbreaking success, revolutionizing the way stories were told in cinema and quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. The original trilogy continued with "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and "Return of the Jedi" (1983), concluding the saga of the Rebel Alliance's struggle against the tyrannical Galactic Empire.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lucas returned to the franchise with a prequel trilogy, exploring the origins of characters such as Anakin Skywalker (who becomes Darth Vader) and the rise of the Empire. This trilogy consisted of "The Phantom Menace" (1999), "Attack of the Clones" (2002), and "Revenge of the Sith" (2005).
Following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, a new era of Star Wars began with the release of the sequel trilogy, which picks up the story decades after the events of the original films. The sequel trilogy includes "The Force Awakens" (2015), "The Last Jedi" (2017), and "The Rise of Skywalker" (2019), concluding the Skywalker saga.
In addition to the main episodic films, the Star Wars universe has expanded through various spin-off films, animated series, novels, comics, video games, and other media. These stories explore different aspects of the galaxy far, far away, delving into the lives of characters both familiar and new, as well as the broader conflicts and mythology of the Star Wars universe.
