One-steps (Il Su Sik Dae Ryun) are used for self-defense in traditional Tang Soo Do styles. They are a defensive reaction to a punch thrown at the defender. While they are practiced from a traditional stance and attack, they are also useful from a practical stand point.

There are approximately 30 basic hand and 30 basic foot one steps required to pass a black belt test. There are more one steps after gaining a blackbelt that are more advanced and difficult to perform. The reason for such a high number is that we realie not everyone is comfortable doing every single one of the one steps.

As such, a student will find those which he or she are comfortable with and will perfect those and when the time to utilize them happens, they will execute those moves to their full effectiveness. The following list has a number and description for each one step.

Il Su Sik Dae Ryun Hand Techniques

  1. Slide 45 degrees with right foot into horse stance, left knife hand block and right high punch
  2. Step into horse stance with right foot, double knife hand block, right back fist to side of head
  3. Step into horse stance with right foot, right knife hand block, right elbow strike to solar plexus
  4. Step into horse stance with right foot, right knife hand block, right elbow strike to solar plexus, spinning left elbow to solar plexus
  5. Step into horse stance with right foot, right knife hand block, right knife hand strike to neck
  6. Slide 45 degrees to the left into horse stance, left palm block, right punch to ribs, left punch to ribs, right punch to head
  7. Slide 45 degrees with right foot into horse stance, left knife hand block and right knife hand strike to neck
  8. Step back with right foot into horse stance, left knife hand block, grab and pull, right elbow to face
  9. Step into horse stance with right foot, right knife hand block, right elbow to solar plexus, right back fist to face, right hammer first to groin
  10. Step back with left foot into fighting stance, right knife hand block, grab with right hand, simultaneous left hand strike to elbow, left foot sweep

Il Su Sik Dae Ryun Kick Techniques

  1. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right front kick
  2. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right side kick
  3. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right roundhouse kick
  4. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right spinning back kick
  5. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, Hop 45 degrees to the left with left foot and execute right side kick to ribs
  6. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, duck under punch while stepping to the left with left foot, right roundhouse kick
  7. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right front push kick
  8. Kihap, step 45 degrees to left with the left foot and execute a right inside-outside knife hand block, grab wrist, right hook kick
  9. Kihap, Step back into fighting stance with right foot and execute left hand knife hand block, grab arm with both hands, right roundhouse kick to head
  10. Step back into fighting stance with right foot, Kihap, right outside inside crescent kick block, left spinning wheel kick
