Social Change and Collective Identity Lab

About SCCI Lab

In the Social Change and Collective Identity (SCCI) laboratory, we study the role of people's group memberships in their responses to and participation in social change. Specifically, our lab conducts research on three related questions: (1) how do people cope with low group status and discrimination; (2) when and why people are willing to engage in and support collective action on their group's behalf; and (3) how do people manage their commitments to multiple groups as they adjust to new contexts?  We work with various groups, such as Muslim Americans and Mexican and Dominican immigrants; in various settings, such as college clubs, community organizations, and the laboratory; using various methods, such as surveys, interviews, focus groups, and experiments.  As diversity in the United States increases, our research has implications for how groups get along and when people act to help their communities.
