Violence Intervention & Prevention (VIP) Training

THE GOAL …

To create a critical mass of individuals willing and able to do their small part to end violence at TCNJ.

THE HEART …

VIP training is a community level approach to violence prevention that harnesses the power of peer influence to create culture change. VIP training targets all community members as potential bystanders, and seeks to engage them through awareness, education, and skills-practice in proactive behaviors that establish intolerance of violence as the norm. Additionally, VIP training prepares participants to intervene in situations that are high-risk for power-based personal violence - resulting in the ultimate reduction of violence. Dr. Dorothy Edwards, creator of the Green Dot at the University of Kentucky, trained OAVI Staff in the spring of 2009 in anticipation of the TCNJ launch at the onset of the 2009-2010 academic year.

THE BRAINS …

Ending violence is too urgent to just "make it up as we go along" or "do what we've always done." In order to maximize the likelihood of success, VIP training is based on bodies of research that inform every aspect of our prevention model. Check out the "Green Dot Research" page for detailed information.

So, what's with the Green Dot?

One in five TCNJ women and one in ten TCNJ men were victims of sexual assault, partner violence, or stalking this year. Each incident hurts us all. These acts of violence are like red dots covering a map, much like an epidemic spreading out of control if not stopped. But, we CAN stop violence and you are a part of the solution. Through your words, choices and your actions in any given moment, you can add a “green dot” to our map — displacing a red dot — and making a difference.

A “Green Dot” symbolizes a single moment in time that can be used to end perpetration or support victims of violence. Adding a green dot will increase community safety for everyone.

If each of us adds 1 or 2 or 5 or 100 green dots — we will end the perpetration of violence — one green dot at a time.
