Clem Lab Notes
Congratulations to our most recent Clem Lab graduates: Alanna Cohen, Amanda Goble and Brad Newton!

Fall 2015:

Using genomic and gene sequence data, I reconstruct phylogenies, or branching diagrams that reflect evolutionary relationships and amount of genetic change. We then use these phylogenies to trace morphological evolution, describe historical dispersal patterns, and estimate the age of plant groups. This research ultimately aids in documenting and describing plant biodiversity and better understanding the historical events that shaped the environments we see today. My research occurs both in the field to collect and observe plants in their natural habitat, as well as at the bench to collect plant molecular and morphological data.
Students who work with me will become familiar with laboratory techniques such as DNA extraction, PCR, cloning, and sequencing, among others, in addition to learning about bioinformatics and applying phylogenetic methods and theory. We also use light microscopy and SEM to examine and study morphological features of plants.
Students who are interested in participating in one of my ongoing research projects, or are broadly interested in evolution, ecology, bioinformatics, botany, and/or systematics, should feel free to contact me for more information.
