The Haven

Mission Statement:

The Haven is an e-mail based peer support organization run by TCNJ students. The group was established in 2000, and is an offshoot of Prism, TCNJs club for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, intersex, and questioning students and their allies. We offer confidential support for students who are dealing with a wide range of sexual orientation and gender identity issues. This includes students who are confused, questioning, closeted, want information and resources, or just need someone to talk to.We are also happy to correspond with those who are struggling to understand someone elses sexuality or gender identity, or who are supporting a friend through related issues.

It should be noted that the Haven is not a professional service, but rather an organization where students can find resources, an open ear, and possible alternatives to difficult or uncomfortable situations.

Limitations:

The Haven is a student based organization dedicated to the well-being of the students who are seeking a confidential forum for discussion. In hosting this forum, it should be noted that the students involved are not accredited counselors. While we are dedicated to aiding students, we cannot and will not diagnose any students from any of the information given. The objective of the Haven is to facilitate the communication of students who feel silenced, and to accomplish this goal, the Haven provides resources and time to process personal issues through talk and email/web-based discussion. The organization does not purport to have answers for the obstacles that students encounter, but it does attempt to help the students consider thoughtful perspectives for resolutions. The confidentiality of the students remains of the utmost priority; however, if at anytime students report situations to the Haven that may be deemed destructive or dangerous to self or others, it is the responsibility of the Haven to report the knowledge of those circumstances to the appropriate campus offices.
