COMMUNITY SERVICE
The College of New Jersey has a strong tradition of serving the people of New Jersey. We promote service participation through service learning and volunteerism in local communities throughout the region. As one of the newest members of our campus community, First Year Students will have many opportunities to learn and serve, beginning with Welcome Week.

Walk-a-thon for Special Olympics: For the past thirteen years, The College of New Jersey has proudly hosted the Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games. During this time the Walk-a-Thon has raised over $70,000 to support this outstanding program. Students may get involved by collecting donations and joining their new classmates in a 1.9 mile walk around campus. It’s a great way to meet new people, get some exercise, and support Special Olympics!

Community Outreach: Want to jump right in and make a difference in our community? First Year Students will be able to select from several direct service activities with local social service agencies, such as the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the Mercer County Childcare program. Transportation and staff supervision will be provided. More details about service options will be provided upon your arrival to campus.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING

What to Wear?

Most of the program is casual so bring comfortable clothes that are appropriate for the weather. You will be walking around campus, which means walking shoes are a must. Air-conditioned buildings can be cold so you may want to bring a sweater.

Pack your bathing suit just in case you want to cool off in the pool. Convocation is the formal ceremony that opens the academic year. You will need dressy clothes, slacks, tie, jacket, skirt or dresses.

What to Bring?
Programs have been designed to allow you to show your talents. There will be an "open mic night" in Travers-Wolfe and an event titled "Spoken Word" in Decker Hall.  Bring your instruments, poetry and other talents!

Residential students may want to bring a fan. Residence halls are not air-conditioned.

WELCOME WEEK

Speakers

DR. BERTICE BERRY

No one defies stereotypes, generalizations or cliches more than Dr. Bertice Berry . Growing up poor in Wilmington , Delaware , the sixth of seven children, Bertice was told by a high school teacher that she was "not college material".

Bertice not only graduated magna cum laude from Jacksonville where she was awarded the President's Cup for leadership, she subsequently earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Kent State University at the age of 26. Dr. Berry taught sociology and statistics at Kent , and demonstrated that she knew a few things about humor, as well. "A colleague said to me, 'You're funny,' and I said, 'No I'm not, I'm a scholar,'" recounts Dr. Berry . It was then that she realized by using humor in her lectures to address such difficult subjects as racism and sexism she was making a more profound impact.  Dr. Berry left Kent to become an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedienne. Her awards include: National Comedian of the Year Award, Campus Lecturer of the Year, and Campus Entertainer of the Year.

Dr. Berry was the host and co-executive producer of her own nationally syndicated talk show, "The Bertice Berry Show," and hosted "USA Live," a four-hour live interview and entertainment show on the USA Cable Network. She's been featured on numerous other television programs, including appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," and "BET Live" with Tavis Smiley.

She is noted as the best-selling author of several books including: I'm On My Way, But Your Foot Is On My Head, Sckraight From the Ghetto, You Might Be Ghetto If and the sequel You STILL Ghetto, Redemption Song, and The Haunting of Hip Hop. In August 2002, she released her most passionate work ever, titled, Jim & Louella's Homemade Heart-fix Remedy.

Dr. Berry ’s community involvement begins with her work with At-Risk Youth and teaching at area prisons and schools.  In addition, she has graciously donated all of the royalties from the sales of her books to organizations that help families of terminally ill children, raise funds for orphanages, and provide resource information to low-income families.  Despite all of her honors and achievements, Dr. Berry is most proud of becoming the "instant mother" to her sister's four young children.

ELAINE PASQUA

Elaine is a nationally recognized speaker who has developed a model for educating diverse groups of students about the effects of AIDS and other high-risk behaviors. She has presented her award-winning programs to thousands of students at colleges and universities across the country.
