John Crothers Pollock, Ph.D., M.(I)P.A.

  John C. Pollock is a Professor in the Communication Studies Department, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). He received his B.A. from Swarthmore (political science), M.(I) P.A. from the Maxwell School at Syracuse (international public administration) and Ph.D. from Stanford (political science). He also studied at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies as a Ph.D. candidate (66-67). His current teaching and research interests include Research Methods, Public Communication Campaigns (especially Health Communication) and International Communication, especially human rights issues. John has taught at Rutgers University and the City University of New York (Queens College) and has conducted research in India and Latin America (Colombia),
serving as director of the Latin American Institute at Rutgers. He serves on four editorial boards - The Atlantic Journal of Communication, Communication Research Reports, Communication Studies and Mass Communication & Society -- and is past President of the New Jersey Communication Association. He has authored one book, co-authored three other books and has had scholarly and professional articles published in Journal of Health Communication, Journalism Quarterly, Society, Newspaper Research Journal, Journal of International Communication, Mass Communication Review and Communication Yearbook IV, as well as The New York Times, The Nation, Industry Week and the Public Relations Journal. Former president of Research & Forecasts, Inc., a public opinion subsidiary of public relations firm Ruder & Finn, John is the recipient of a Silver Anvil, the "Oscar" of the Public Relations Society of America. He has also appeared on the TODAY show and Nightline and has testified before congress on the results of his surveys. John has received two contracts from the National Cancer Institute to study media coverage of tobacco control efforts. Past chair of The College of New Jersey Marketing Advisory Council and of the Arts & Sciences Curriculum Committee, John received the first teaching award for "Mentoring Student Research" ever presented by The College of New Jersey in February, 2002. He also received the 2003 "Adviser of the Year" award from the National Communication Association for his work with the TCNJ chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national student communication honor society.
