WOODWIND MAJOR AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

FLUTE

 

Technique:       All major scales - 2 octaves - with correct fingerings

 

Studies:                        Koehler, Berbiguier, Andersen, or equivalent

 

Solo:                Any two contrasting movements of any standard flute sonata or concerto          

An acceptable alternative is any one of the All-State/Region audition solos.

 

Sight Reading: The candidate may be asked to play a piece at sight.

 

OBOE

 

Technique:       All major scales slurred

 

Studies:                        Barrett Studies, Ferling Studies, or equivalent

 

Solo:                Any standard oboe sonata or concerto

An acceptable alternative is any one of the All-State/Region audition solos.

 

Sight Reading: The candidate may be asked to play a piece at sight.

 

CLARINET

 

NOTE:  Auditions and formal study will be on the Bb clarinet only.

 

Technique:       Major scales in C, G, D, A, E, B, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db

 

Studies:                        Choose from C. Rose 32 Etudes—number 1 or 2

 

Solo:                Choose one from the following:

 

"Solo de Concours" by Henri Rabaud

                        "Concerto #1 in F Minor," Op. 73 by C.M. von Weber (mvt.1)

                        "Fantasie Caprice" by C. Lefebvre

 

In addition to the above, the candidate may choose any one of the All-State/Region audition solos.

 

Sight Reading: The candidate may be asked to play a piece at sight.

 

SAXOPHONE

 

NOTE:  Auditions and formal study will be on the alto saxophone only.

 

Technique:       All major and minor scales

 

Studies:            An etude from Klose or Mule Book and 2 dissimilar etudes from W. Ferling, 48 Famous Studies (optional, published by Southern Music Co.)

 

Solo:                Handel Sonata #3 (or equivalent) and one composition from the French repertoire

An acceptable alternative is any one of the All-State/Region audition solos.

 

Sight Reading: The candidate may be asked to play a piece at sight.

 

BASSOON

 

Technique:       All major scales and arpeggios with correct fingerings

 

Studies:                        Milde Scale or Concert Studies, or equivalent

 

Solo:                Any standard bassoon sonata or concerto

An acceptable alternative is any one of the All-State/Region audition solos.
