Searching the Databases

Searching periodical databases can be a little complicated for beginners because each of the various companies that produces the databases gives its own database search screens a different look and way of searching.

However, you should feel more confident searching periodical databases in the TCNJ library when you complete this module. This is because the database you'll be practicing in is an easy to use multidisciplinary periodical database that can help you do research for many assignments as a beginning searcher at TCNJ.

More advanced courses will require the use of many other databases available through the campus library. Even first year students will find that searching more than one database is often necessary because, for certain topics, you may find only a few articles using a single database.

Remember to ask the reference librarians for help with your research and searching the various databases. Getting their assistance when you start your research can save you hours of frustration.

You can contact the reference librarians several different ways. These include coming to the Reference Desk in the library, calling them at (609) 771-2417, or using the email service called “Ask a Librarian” which has a prominent link on the library home page.
