Getting a Copy of an Article
When You Only Have Its Citation

Remember that some of the article citations in your search results seemed to have no full text (HTML or PDF)? Many databases you'll need to access through the TCNJ library simply have no full text articles in them at all. However, many databases will display a link that says "Search for full text."

The rest of this module will show you how to search for full text copies (electronic or print) of articles for which you have only citations.

Here's a preview of your options:

  1. You can easily find out if the periodical you need is full text in another of the 100 or so databases to which the library provides access. If one database producer doesn't have permission from a periodical's publisher to provide it in full text, other database producers often do have permission. You'll search a list of the library's periodicals and find a link to a database that may include the date of the periodical you need.
  2. If the article is not available in electronic full text in another database, the periodical in which the article was published may well be available physically in the library. In that case, you'll see a record from the TCNJ library catalog for the periodical title. You can then make a photocopy of the article on one of the library photocopiers using your ID card with cash value on it. If you don't have cash value on your TCNJ ID card, you can use a machine near the Access Services Desk at the entrance to the library to add cash value. Of course, you can also read the article without copying it!
  3. If you can't find the article available either full text in a database or physically in the library, you can request that the library get a copy of it for you using its Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service. Details about this option follow on the next page.
