MEETING MINUTES: 2/13/2008
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!
Events
Mitch Shapiro: Mitch Shapiro will be presenting in two weeks, on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Mitch is the CEO of the Foundation for Sight & Sound, and he will be giving a motivational speech about growing up with both vision and hearing losses. DHC is cosponsoring the event with DB Faces, a group here on campus. The presentation will be held in FH 130 and the program will run from 1-3pm. A reception is to follow the lecture. We will need your help with publicizing this event and ushering (program distribution, helping people to seats, etc.) the afternoon of the event. Email us if you are interested in ushering and stay tuned for emails about flier distribution.
MKSD Field Day: Two tentative dates have been set aside for the field day we run at the NJ School for the Deaf. We are looking at either Wednesday, April 16th, or Wednesday, April 23rd as possible dates. At this point in time we are waiting for a date confirmation from Katzenbach staff so sit tight! We will discuss possible activities and games at future meetings. If you have any ideas email the club.
Paired Reading Project: We are extending our Paired Reading Project to 4 different locations. Each executive board member is acting as the liaison for one school site in which club members can sign up to visit and read their stories. We still need both English readers and ASL signers so pick which school site and date works best for you and email us about signing up for that site. Here is a brief overview of the site locations:
Lauren-Morris Plains Elementary School on 3/5 (filled)
Elaine-Sign Club in Middletown on 4/4 at 5:20pm
Nicole P.-West New York Public School on 3/12 (need English readers)
Nicole L.-Flemington Elementary School 1st grade, 4/2 at 1pm (need English readers)
As you can see we really need people to read stories in English. This is a great opportunity for those of you still in ASL I or II or for anyone who has not had a sign course, as you will get to see what the Paired Reading Project is like and become more comfortable with the signing component. We will set up carpools so do not worry if you need a ride! Please contact us if you are interested in this project.
Fundraising
Calendars: We still have a few Color of Language calendars left from last semester’s fundraiser. Remember, the calendar is 14-months long (January 2008 – February 2009) and references English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. $10/calendar. Contact us if you are interested.
NJ DEAF ED Hoodies: You have probably seen students with t’s or sweatshirts that say: NEW JERSEY MATH, NEW JERSEY ENGINEERING, NEW JERSEY TEACHING, etc and so we will be taking orders for NEW JERSEY DEAF ED hooded sweatshirts. Official order forms will be sent via email within the next few days, and you will have a few weeks to place orders. Look out for the NJ Deaf Ed Order Form email!
Fwingers: Keychains have been ordered from the Fwingers Company. Assorted colors are available of the “I Love You” handshape. We are selling them for $5/keychain, and for every keychain we sell $1 will be donated to the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut:) Keychains will be available at all future meetings and events.
