MEETING MINUTES: 1/30/2008

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!!!

Events
Mitch Shapiro: SAVE THE DATE! Our big event of the semester will be happening in just 4 weeks! On Wednesday, February 27, 2008 Mitch Shapiro, CEO of the Foundation for Sight & Sound, will be giving a motivational speech about growing up with both vision and hearing losses. He will present in FH 130 and the program will run from 1-3pm. A reception is to follow the lecture. In the next few weeks we will be needing help with publicity for this event so please e-mail the club if you are interested in helping out.

MKSD Field Day: Two tentative dates have been set-aside for the field day we run at the NJ School for the Deaf. We are looking at either Wednesday, April 16th, or Wednesday, April 23rd as possible dates. In the past we have conducted games such as kickball, wiffle ball, bowling, obstacle courses, etc. If you have any game ideas please let us know. Also, if you are in ASL 101 or 102, partaking in the MKSD Field Day will act as a Deaf Contact Experience, and if you are in ASL 103 contact Dr. Slobodzian about using this experience towards your Community Engaged Learning (CEL) hours.

Paired Reading Project: In the past DHC members have paired off, picked a children’s story to read in English and sign in ASL, and then presented their story to a classroom full of students. This year we are continuing the Paired Reading Project, but we are extending it to 4 different locations with the hopes of reaching out to a variety of programs and schools around New Jersey. Each executive board member will act as the liaison for one school site in which club members can sign up to visit and read their stories. Here is a brief overview of the site locations:
Lauren-Morris Plains Elementary School on 3/5
Elaine-Sign Club in Middletown on 3/7 at 5:20pm
Nicole P.-West New York Public School, dates and times to come
Nicole L.-Flemington Elementary School 1st grade general ed. classroom, 3/19 or 4/2
We still need people who are interested in signing stories (there are library resources you can use for ASL help, movies on reserve on the 4th floor of the Library), and we also need people interested in reading the stories in English. This is a great opportunity for those of you still in ASL I or II or for anyone who hasn’t had a sign course, as you will get to see what the Paired Reading Project is like and become more comfortable with the signing component. We will set up carpools so do not worry if you need a ride! Please contact us if you are interested in this project.

Other News
*Check out our bulletin board on the 3rd floor of Forcina (outside room 349) for information regarding ASL story hours at the Library for the Blind, conferences, interpreted plays, and many other happenings taking place in the Deaf community.

ASL Story Hours: the next story hour at the Library for the Blind in on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. You can attend the story hour and use it as a Deaf Contact Experience (ASL I and II) ONLY IF you actually chat-using ASL-with the children or adults who are present. Our bulletin board has postings with further dates and times for story hours in 2008.

Grace’s Law: stay connected with the Deaf community by reading some articles and looking into the passing of Grace’s Law. Advocates are trying to get insurance companies to cover the costs of hearing aids. The law has gone through the first official step of processing, so stay tuned… read the newspaper!

Fundraising
Calendars: We still have about 10 Color of Language calendars left from last semester’s fundraiser. Remember, the calendar is 14-months long (January 2008 – February 2009) and references English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. $10/calendar. Contact us if you are interested.

NJ DEAF ED Hoodies: We want to find out if enough people are interested in ordering NEW JERSEY DEAF ED sweatshirts! You have probably seen students with t’s or sweatshirts that say: NEW JERSEY MATH, NEW JERSEY ENGINEERING, NEW JERSEY TEACHING, etc and so we plan to order NEW JERSEY DEAF ED if enough people are interested. If we decide to order, official order forms will be provided and money will be collected beforehand. Let us know what you think.

Fwingers: We will be ordering key chains from the Fwingers company with the “I Love You” handshape on them. An assortment of colors will be available and you can pick one up at any of our meetings, bake sales, etc. The best part is, for every keychain we sell, $1 will be donated to the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut :)

Bake Sales: we hope to schedule one or two bake sales throughout the course of the semester. These can act as a direct fundraiser to help our club. When dates are established, we will contact people to see who wants to bake and who wants to sell in the Student Center. More information to come!
