MEETING MINUTES: 9/26/2007

Upcoming Events
We have three really exciting events coming up this semester:
1. Dennis Jones – 10/10/2007, we are bringing the author of “Tarnished Halos and Crooked Fences” to our campus for a presentation and book signing. The definite date is Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 and an almost definite location is the Library Auditorium. Look for further e-mails regarding definite location and start time. If you are in ASL 101 or 102 this event will count as a Deaf Contact Experience.
2. MKSD Field Day – 10/17/2007, we will be conducting a field day at Katzenbach on Wednesday, October 17th, 2007. Field Days usually run about 2.5 hours (approx. noon – 2:30 pm). In the past we have done a variety of indoor and outdoor games with the students such as kickball, parachutes, bowling, etc. If you have any new ideas about possible activities please e-mail the club. You will need to sign up for the Field Day, so keep those eyes open for an e-mail. Also, if you are in ASL 101 or 102, partaking in the MKSD Field Day will act as a Deaf Contact Experience, and if you are in ASL 103 contact Dr. Slobodzian about using this experience towards your Community Engaged Learning (CEL) hours.
3. CJ Jones – 11/14/2007, CJ is an internationally known Deaf comedian who will be performing here at TCNJ on November 14, 2007 in the Mayo Concert Hall at 8:00 pm. We will be extending an invitation to the high school students from MKSD which is really exciting. We need people to help publicize this event, so if you are interested please e-mail the club. Also, there is no admission fee for this event.

Sign Times/Silent Game Night – In order to practice our sign language skills, we plan on setting-up sign times and a silent game night where everyone could come to relax, learn a few things, and have fun! These “chat times” are open to everyone. Contact the club if you are interested in “leading” a sign time. We will give you further information regarding available sign times once they have been set-up.

Paired Readings – ASL and English Storytelling: Last year we were very successful with our paired reading project, however this year we hope to branch out to a wider community. If you are interested in resources regarding the ASL component of some of the children’s books we read and signed, visit Media Services on the 4th floor of our Library or contact the club for further information.

Fundraising
T-Shirts – we will bring a few options for T-Shirt designs to our next meeting (10/10/2007) so make sure you come out to vote for the one you like best!
Gimme Jimmy’s Cookies – this baking company was started by a Deaf man from New Jersey, who now hires people from the Deaf Community to run his stores located throughout the state. By partaking in a fundraiser with this company we would be raising money for the events DHC brings to campus while simultaneously supporting members of the Deaf Community.
