Meeting Minutes 9/13/2006

Fall Events

Deaf author book signing—November 30, 2006
(tentative, waiting for confirmation from author), Time TBA (evening sometime)
Darline Clark-Gunsauls is a children’s book author. We’re looking to have her come here and speak about her books and experiences. We’ll also sell her books and have a book signing. Brining students from the Katzenbach School for the Deaf over is also a possibility.

Katzenbach Day—October 11, 2006 (possibly during regular meeting time)
For new members who may not know, the Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf (MKSD) is the New Jersey state school for the deaf. It’s both a residential school and a day school. We’re thinking of going there one day to do crafts and things with them (all with a “Fall Festival” type theme). Let us know if you have any ideas of things we could do with that.

Museum Visit
MKSD has just opened a small museum that tells the history of the school and Deaf culture in general. We may plan a trip there to check it out. Stay tuned.

Other Possible Events

Volunteering at the Plainsboro Deaf-Blind Apartments
ASL story hours at local schools (one person reads a book while the other signs it)
ASL story hours at the Library for the Blind and Handicapped (attending and/or participating)
The Wild Zappers (they’re group who sing and dance to rap music and were started by a former student of our advisor, Dr. Slobodzian)
The Gallaudet University Dance Company (they performed here and were really good!)
The family from the documentary Sound and Fury (they’re a deaf family who find themselves in the center of the cochlear implant controversy, you can find more information about the documentary online, just Google it)

Arsenic and Old Lace
The Bridge Players Theater is putting on a shadow interpreted performance of this play on October 13th at 8PM. The theater is in Burlington, NJ and tickets are $15. For more information go to www.BridgePlayersTheater.com or call 856-303-7620.

Fundraisers
We made $463.36 selling tickets to Great Adventure last year! Go us! Thanks to all that helped out!

We took suggestions from the crowd about things they’d like to see the club do this year. They were:
A few people expressed interest in learning sign language. Unfortunately, we can’t teach it in the club setting, but if you come to meetings you’re sure to pick up a lot.
Also, we’re going to try Silent Lunches (or dinners) again. In the past, we’ve gathered somewhere to have lunch or dinner and turned off our voices to sign. It’s a great informal setting for those who don’t know sign language to learn and for those who know some already to practice their skills. So stay tuned about that.
A conversation hour-type group for those who have finished ASL 3 and don’t have a venue to keep up their skills.
Closed Captioned movie nights
Going to see or bringing to campus a group that performs songs in ASL such as “Image” from Bloomsburg University or “Music in Motion” from the local area.

We also had signups for our committees. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up or weren’t at the meeting but want to join a committee just e-mail the club at deafhc@tcnj.edu. The committees are: Programs (help out with things that need to be done when we’re planning an event), Outreach (just like it sounds, help reach out to the community to get them involved with us and us involved with them), Fundraising (again, just like it sounds), Publicity (helping to make fliers and table tents and coming up with new fundraising ideas), Historian (helping to update our bulletin board in Forcina and our scrapbook), Webmaster (if you’re interested in web design and stuff you can help out our Webmaster).
DHC is a student-run organization at The Collge of New Jersey
