Intro to Social influence

As teenagers living in this fast paced, multi-tasking, image driven society you are constantly “under the influence.”  You may think I don’t drink! You are under the influence of a socialist system that tries to control the way you act and think.

Social influence is as powerful as the values and beliefs that your parents instilled in you as a child.  Sometimes social influence causes us to conform in ways that do not represent the set of values and views instilled in us.

What else would make us “go along” with ideas, decisions and people that is not necessarily a good representation of our views or who we are.  Is social influence powerful enough to make us conform?  Are we truly more of the sum total than its individual parts?  Has social influence interrupted our dreams and inspirations to take part or fulfill another’s dreams.  Is all social influence negative?  Can I conform to something that’s positive?  Is conformity a bad thing?

This web tutorial was created to answer allot of the questions above as well as teach young people how much society influences us and cause us to conform.  The website provides examples of how we conform in virtual communities where there is not in person group contact.  Could conformity through social networks be the challenge of future generations of young people?  Perhaps the effects conformity should be examined in virtual communities.  This tutorial was designed to help young people understand the types of conformity and the conformity process in hopes getting them to gain knowledge so they conform in ways that promote growth.
