Social Influence and Conformity
 

 The primary causes of conformity are the result of  all the social influence and situations or social norms in society breeds conformity.  

What is conformity?

Conformity is a change in behavior due to the real or imagined Influence of other people (Aaronson, 2004)

When do people conform?

In general people tend to conform as a result of group size and whether or not the majority opinion is unanimous.  Group pressure tends to increases conformity as a result of accountability to the group and desire sense of belonging.  Individuals who generally have low self esteem are more likely to conform than those with high self esteem.  Some conform to avoid punishment... while others to gain reward.

                     

Types of  Conformity

 

1.  Compliance - Public action in accordance with the group, while privately

      disagreeing (short term change)

2. Obedience - acts in accordance to a direct order

3. Acceptance Conformity that involves both acting and believing in accordance

    with social pressure (long term change)
