ART 302 : Introduction

You are about to continue the journey of printmaking! This complex art form is comprised of many different variants of fine arts. It encompasses a wide array of elements, including drawing, composition, color, and tool usage. In addition tools can make multiple images composed of the designers concept and usage of space. In this course you will continue to expand your knowledge of this art form with efforts to produce exhibition quality prints from concept to creation. You will be asked to utilize self-discipline, personal reflection, and expression within your work to produce a final total of six prints that represent yourself as the artist, and the time period in which you live.

Class Policy

Attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences will result in a reduction of grade. Each class period equals ten points; which will be deducted from your grade for every missed class. Participation in critique and class discussions is also required. Failure to meet critique deadlines will result in a reduction of your grade. You must receive my approval on all compositions before beginning to work on your proposed projects.

Course Objectives:

In this class we will explore more advanced methods of printmaking. You will specialize in one area of interest of your choice but will be expected to explore, with an open, mind the other areas as well.

1. LITHOGRAPHY: Printing process based on the unmixable properties of water and grease; usually done on limestone or grained metal plates.

2. SILKSCREEN: Stencil process using a mesh stretched over a frame. Ink is forced through openings in the mesh, which can be blocked by a variety of methods.

3. INTAGLIO PRINTING: Method of printing in which ink is forced into incised lines or recessions on a plate, The surface is wiped clean and dampened paper is placed on top, The paper and the plate are then run through an etching press to transfer the ink to the paper. This process encompasses etching, engraving, aqua tint, collagraphs, and other techniques.

4. RELIEF PRINTING: A method in which the ink surface of the plate or block prints and areas or lines that are gouged out do not print. Examples include woodcut, linoleum cut, relief etching, and relief collagraph.

5. COLLAGRAPH: A print made from a collage of various materials glued together on a cardboard, metal, or hardboard plate.

Course Requirements

All students are responsible for not only their own work, but also the upkeep of the studio. This is a space we all share and use, therefore it is also everyone’s responsibility to keep the studio clean and orderly. At the end of each class session, you must complete your clean up and sign up on the clean up sheet. Failure to do so will impact your grade by a 5 point deduction. Please use newspapers on tables when applying inks, hardground, or softground. Protect tables with cardboard or cutting mats when using knives or any type of cutting device.

There will be a total of two outside trips required for this class. One of the two trips must be to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City and the second, may be chosen by the student. You must receive my approval on the museum of your choice before attending or run the risk of it not counting toward your grade. A brief reaction paper (1-2 pages in length), on a piece you felt a connection with is expected and will play a role in the tally of your final grade.

In addition to in class work each student will be required to partake in a certain amount of outside projects. You will have various choices to work with and MUST complete five selections out of the fourteen options by the end of the course. Demonstrations on the techniques will be given in class, a small supply list will be distributed and you will be expected to complete the five individual assignments. This lesson is geared toward those who are preparing to teach in the public school system. This will ensure that you will have a lesson plan and projects suitable for use in the classroom setting.

YOU WILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR NEXT CLASS

Visit the TCNJ library or any other library of your choice and research a famous artist. Select an artist whose style you can relate to or find interesting. You are to compose a composition that will be based on the style of the artist of your selection, so choose wisely. A small paper (approx 1 page) on why you chose the artist and what his/her style means to you will be collected during next weeks class. Have fun and explore with this assignment!

Grading Policy

50% - ATTENDANCE / PREPARATION FOR CLASS CRITIQUES

Techniques and processes are routinely demonstrated. Missing these demonstrations or not being prepared to work at each class is unacceptable. Printmaking is a process: you must first learn one technique completely before you can progress onto the next. In order to obtain positive results, you must fully understand the complete etching and linoleum block process.

50% - FINISHED PRINTS / CRITIQUE

You will be required to complete eight prints. These prints will demonstrate the techniques you have learned. The eight prints can be black and white, color, or a combination of the two. All eight prints will be properly matted and covered with acetate, thus meeting exhibition standards. This is how your work is to be presented for the final critique. Criteria for the final grade will depend upon the understanding and proper execution of all the etching and block printing techniques demonstrated, the complexity and balance of the composition, adherence to the required deadline, and participation in the critique.

!!!GOOD LUCK, WORK HARD, AND ENJOY ADVANCED PRINTMAKING!!!
