The 2003 season
marks the 21st full season for Rick Dell as head coach of TCNJ's
baseball team. In the summer of 1995, Dell had been the head coach
of two of TCNJ's most successful men's athletic teams, the men's
soccer and baseball teams. Dell has accumulated over 725 career
wins and 17 NCAA Tournament berths. He is already The College's
all-time leader in baseball wins and ended his soccer coaching career
as The College's all-time victory leader, having produced a 182-60-23
record during his 14 seasons at the helm of the men's soccer program.
In 20+ seasons with the baseball
team, including his first year as interim coach, Dell has piloted
the baseball team to a 552-278-9 record. The last 11 years have
resulted in new high-water marks for baseball at TCNJ. The baseball
team has compiled a won-loss record of 330-148-4 from 1991-2002,
while the team has netted NCAA Regional Tournament appearances 12
times since 1985. The Lions have appeared in the NCAA Regionals
from 1985-87, 1990-94, 1998-2000, and again this past season. In
1991, The College of New Jersey (then Trenton State College) enjoyed
its greatest baseball campaign ever, going 34-15-1 and finishing
runner-up to the University of Southern Maine in the NCAA Championship
game of the Division III World Series. That same year, Dell was
rewarded with a selection as the Coach of the Year by the New Jersey
Baseball Coaches Association while also earning NCAA Regional Coach
of the Year honors as well.
In 2000, TCNJ captured the
NJAC Tournament Championship, their first since 1981. At year's
end, Dell was named the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company Division III
Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year after guiding his team to
it's third straight NCAA Regional Runner-up finish. The 2001 Lions
advanced to the NJAC Championship game, only to settle for a second
place finish in the tournament and miss an NCAA tournament bid.
The 2002 Lions made a return
trip to the College World Series after winning the Mid-Atlantic
Regionals as the No. 6 seed. The Lions eclipsed school marks having
combined to strikeout 436 of the opposition, while having also been
hit by a pitch 68 times as well last year. They also tied TCNJ's
record for most games played and most wins in a season at 50 and
36. For the year, the Lions finished in fourth place at the 2002
Division III College World Series, and Dell was named the 2002 ABCA
NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year. In addition,
he was recognized by his peers with the 2002 Roy Van Ness Award,
given annually at The College.
Dell assumed the head baseball coaching position at TSC midway through
the 1982 season. From 1983 until 1995, his squads won at least 20
games, while the 1998 squad returned to that level recording 29
wins.
Dell has been a mentor to
many players who have received national honors while playing in
the Lion pin stripes. Most recently, pitcher Bryan Dilgard was tapped
for All-America honors after setting a school mark for his 28 appearances
in 1999. In 2000, junior ace, Chris Buglovsky concluded his stellar
career by establishing new career marks for strikeouts and was drafted
as the No. 77 pick in the 2000 Major League Draft by the Colorado
Rockies. On the 2001 season, TCNJ had two player named All-Americans
as Bob Capaldo and Colin Renick were both honored by the ABCA. This
past season, both Capaldo and Mike Kohri were tapped by the ABCA
as All-Americans, while Kohri was named the Player of the Year by
the NJAC, the ECAC, and the NJCBA.
Since 1989 Dell has spent
his summers instructing baseball players in abroad training amateur
and professional teams in Italy, Germany, Estonia, Australia, and
New Zealand with the United States Baseball Federation and Major
League Baseball International. Six years ago, Dell was named the
director of the Greater Philadelphia Christmas Baseball Camp. In
1996, Dell added Indonesia to his list of travels while working
for USA Baseball. In 1999, he traveled to the Philippines and New
Zealand, while serving as a coordinator for game development in
Asia/Pacific for Major League Baseball. Two summers ago, he became
the first representative from Major League Baseball to go into China,
while serving as a coordinator for game development in both Asia
and the Pacific.
Seven years ago, Dell was
selected to serve as a clinic leader for Major League Baseball International
European Tour, which was held in Scandinavia in 1997.
Dell was married to Terry
Raskaukas in Rome, Italy in October of 2000, and the couple resides
in Princeton.
