Ewing, NJ—The National Communication Association (NCA) awarded The College of New Jersey’s Lambda Pi Eta (LPE) national honor society its “Chapter of the Year” and “Adviser of the Year” awards at the association’s annual conference in Miami on November 19-23, 2003.
The award for “Chapter of the Year” was presented to TCNJ students Allison Rosinski, a senior from New Egypt and president of the College’s Alpha Xi chapter of LPE, and Katie Pagliara, a senior from Branchville and vice president of programming. The award for “Adviser of the Year” was presented to John Pollock, associate professor in the communication studies department and LPE advisor for the past eight years. The awards were presented by Lambda Pi Eta (LPE), the national student honor society of the NCA, with chapters in over 400 colleges and universities nationwide, and one in China.
In the “Chapter of the Year” citation, the awards committee noted the College chapter’s multiple efforts to help students understand the communication field, including a graduate student fair, a career night, a resume workshop, “meet the professors” evenings, and advanced research seminars.
According to Rosinski, “The conference was a great experience for anyone still debating a future path in the communication field. It was amazing to learn how strong the reputation of TCNJ communication students and professors is among scholars nationwide. Out of over 400 chapters, including major universities, we were more than honored to be recognized as ‘Chapter of the Year’.”
Added Pagliara, “We have enthusiastic members in our chapter. Without such dedicated and energetic students, we never would have received this award.” The Alpha Xi chapter received a plaque and $200.
In the “Adviser of the Year” citation, award judges noted Pollock’s long-term commitment to introduce students to the communication field. Pollock regularly helps students run for national office (five of the last seven national presidents of LPE have been from TCNJ); craft and submit scholarly papers accepted for presentation at national, regional and state conferences; seek occupational positions; and apply for admission to highly ranked graduate schools. The committee also recognized Pollock’s activities in accompanying students to conferences and introducing them to other communication scholars.
“I’m deeply honored by this award, which I share both with other dedicated faculty in the communication studies department, and especially with our wonderfully motivated, energetic, talented students,” noted Pollock, who received a plaque at the conference.
With over 5000 members, NCA is the largest organization of communication scholars in the world.
